حينما التقيته لأول مرة عام 1985 في منزل جدّه الراحل نمر شمشوم وكان عمره 16 عاماً واجهت اصالة التراث الفلسطيني في ملامح وجهه الفتية.. قلت له: من انت واين كنت؟ اجاب: انا جورج حاطوم فلسطيني من لبنان وقد جئت تواً من معهد تايف لدراسة اللغة الانكليزية . لقد انشرح فؤادي لسببين: الاول لأن الفتى اليافع عرّف عن نفسه بكلمة فلسطيني وهذه الكلمة غرامي ومصيري في الوقت الذي كان العالم بأجمعه يحاول ابادة الهوية الفلسطنية التي هي من اعرق الحضارات في تاريخ البشرية.. والسبب الثاني انه لم يكن يعرف الانكليزية وبدأ يشق طريقه منذ اليوم الاول من هجرته الى استراليا مدركاً ان مبتدأ استقراره في بلده الجديد هو التسلح بالعلم.. توقعت له مستقبلاً مشرقاً.. ولكن نجاحه فاق بكثير توقعاتي.. ولنتتبع وقائع رحلته منذ البداية وحتى اللحظة.

والداه بشاره ابو حاطوم وجورجيت ابو حاطوم فلسطينيان من مواليد الناصرة هاجرا الى لبنان وقت النكبة عام 1948 .. واستقرت العائلة في مخيمات اللاجئين هناك.. قضى والداه في الحرب الاهلية في لبنان ولجأت عائلته الى استراليا عام 1985 وكانت فقيرة معدومة الحال.. استضافها الراحل جورج يواكيم في منزله لمدة ثلاثة اشهر بدون مقابل.. ذهبت والدته جورجيت للعمل في المصنع.. وتمكنت العائلة المكافحة من الانتقال للعيش في شقة مؤلفة من غرفتين تضم 11 شخصاً.

التحق جورج بالمدرسة وكان في تحصيله العلمي في مؤخرة الصف لعدم تمكنه من الانكليزية.. ولكنه بذل جهداً شاقاً وتابع دراسته وتقدمه حتى حصل في شهادة الثانوية العامة على 99،7 في المئة.. وتابع دراسته في الطب في جامعة نيو ساوث ويلز.. وتخرج منها بتفوق.. واذكر انني كتبت عن انجازه العلمي آنذاك في صحيفة «النهار» مقالاً يحمل عنوان : من طلب العلى سهر الليالي.

التقى جورج اثناء درسته في كلية الطب بتوأم روحه رفيقة دربه كارولين.. وقعا في شباك الحب المنبثق من الصداقة الحميمة.. وكارولين هي المرأة الجميلة التي تشع ذكاءً وايماناً وعاطفة وثقافة اذ ان هوايتها الاطلاع على معظم فروع المعرفة البشرية.. وحصلت على التفوّق بإمتياز في مؤهلات الطب في الجامعات الاسترالية.. رأت ايمانها المسيحي  في مستودع احلامها جورج القادم من بلد القداسة فلسطين مهد السيد المسيح التي بدأ منها التاريخ وينتهي فيها التاريخ.

تزوج جورج بـ كارولين وكانت ثمرة الرابط المقدس نجاحهما سوياً في مهنة الطب والحياة العائلية.. اسسا مراكز طبية ومشاريع تجارية ناجحة.. رسالتها هي انسانية خدمة المرضى.. وبلغت مرتبة كارولين تدريب خريجي الطب في مركزهما الطبي والاشراف على مؤهلاتهم العملية.

العائلة هي الوحدة الاجتماعية الاولى للمجتمع الناجح.. ومنها عملا سوياً في تربية اولادهما وتنشئة جيل متعلم صاحب رسالة انسانية في مجال الطب وخدمة الانسان..  جيل مزيج من العرق الاسترالي الانكلوساكسوني المتميز والاصل الفلسطيني العريق: الابنة البكر الحسناء اماني التي تجمع بين الذكاء المشع والجمال الأخاذ الرقيق حصلت في الثانوية العامة على 99،9 في المئة وهي اعلى نسبة بكالوريا في كل العالم.. وحصلت على لقب ملكة جمال استراليا للمراهقات.. وتدرس الطب.. ولها آمال كبار ونداء مستقبلها المهني لم يتوهج بعد ولا يزال في مرحلة الازدهار والتبلور.

شقيقتها الصغرى اميره ذات الجمال الفتّان والذكاء المتجوّل في شخصيتها.. حصلت الاسبوع الماضي على مجموع معدله 99،45 في المئة.. وقبلت للدراسة في كلية الطب جامعة سيدني.. خططت مستقبل مهنتها منذ الآن بالتخصص بالطب النفسي.. وقد صبغ طموحها المهني هوايتها لعلم النفس اثناء دراسة الثانوية العامة.

اما نبيل وهو النجل الثالث في مقتبل العمر لا يزال في المدرسة الثانوية ويخطط لدراسة القانون في المستقبل.. ويهوي الرياضة ونبغ فيها.. انطلاقاً من المعتقد التقليدي: العقل السليم في الجسم السليم.. وحصل على ميداليات برونزية في المسابقات العالمية في السباحة.. فعاد الى جذوره ومثل فلسطين في مسابقات دولية مثل دبي وكندا.. وهو طاقة رياضية استرالية فلسطينية واعدة.. واتوقع له مستقبلاً مشرقاً.

اما آخر العنقود الفتى سامي نصف الحالم ونصف النائم البالغ من العمر 12 ربيعاً لم يهتدِ الى مستقبله الدراسي والمهني بعد.. ولكنه يهوى الرياضة ايضا وتفوق منذ نعومة اظافره في لعبة كرة السلة..

عائلة جورج وكارولين تجسّد صورة العائلة المثالية المتفوقة بامتياز.. العائلة النموذجية التي تجمع العقل الاسترالي الحرّ النيّر.. والقلب الفلسطيني التاريخي النابض.. مفخرة الشرق والغرب.. في مساحة الزمن العابث الغامض..

Admirable Success of An Australian Palestinian Family

I met George Hatoum for the first time in 1985 at his late grandfather Nimer Shamshoum’s house and he was then 16 years old. The moment I saw his young face features I was able to see a pure Palestinian. I asked him who are you and where did you come from?  He answered I am George Hatoum a Palestinian from Lebanon and I just came from the TAFE, I am studying English. I was extremely happy for two reasons, firstly because the young boy introduced himself as a Palestinian. This word was very important for me as back then the whole world was trying to wipe out the Palestinian Identity, which is the most deep-rooted nationality in the human history. The second reason is because the English language barrier did not stop him from cleaving his path since the first day of his migration to Australia.   He realized that the foundation of his settlement in his new home was education. I foresaw a bright future for him but his success has gone beyond my expectations. So let’s go through his life journey from the beginning until now.

His Parents are Bsharah and Georgette Abu Hatoum Palestinians from Nazareth. They migrated to Lebanon during the Palestinian catastrophe in 1948 (Nakba Day). The family has settled in the Lebanese refugees camps where his father died in the civil war of Lebanon. His family migrated to Australia in 1985 and they were severely poor. They lived in George Youakim’s house for three months for free and his mother Georgette was employed in a factory until the hardworking family of 11 could move to live in a two bedrooms apartment.

George went to school but his academic record was poor because of the language barrier. That did not stop him from maximizing his hard work and studying until he achieved 99.7 in the HSC. After, he studied Medicine in the University of New South Wales and graduated with honors.  I remember that I wrote about his scientific accomplishment back then in AN-Nahar Arabic Newspaper in an article titled by No Pain No Gain من طلب العلى سهر الليالي.

During his study in the medicine school George met his soul mate and companion Caroline, they fall in love after a closed friendship. Caroline is a very beautiful woman, brilliant, believer, affectionate and enlightened. Her hobby is to nurture herself with various branches of human knowledge. She graduated with honors in medicine. As a sincere Christian she saw in George (that came from the holy land of Jesus Christ and the land where history began and it will end) the man of her dreams and they got married.

The fruit of their holy union was an enormous success as medical practitioners as they established a medical center and many successful commercial projects that hold a mission for humanity and a genuine care for the patients. Caroline now training the medical graduates in their medical centres and supervises their practical qualifications. To add one more thing to the basket of blessings a beautiful successful family as they believe that family is the primary social unit for a successful society.

From this point of view they have raised an educated generation that holds the values of the medical field and care about humans. Also a generation with dual ethnic identities, Firstly; the great Anglo Saxon and secondly, the ancient Palestinian roots.

Their first born Amaani combines between the bright intelligence and the charming beauty. She achieved a grade of 99.9 in her HSC, which considered the highest grade in the world and she is studying medicine. She also was crowned as Miss Teen Australia. Amani has huge dreams for the future and we can’t wait to see her professional achievements.

Her younger sister Amira who is also a beautiful and intelligent lady had finished her HSC last week with a grade of 99.45 and was accepted in the medicine school in the University of Sydney. Amira already planned her specialization in psychiatry as she was fond of psychology since she was in high school.

Nabeel is the third after the two girls, he still in high school and planning to study Law in the near future. He also loves sport and believes in the old saying a sound mind in a sound body. Nabil achieved a few bronze medals in the international swimming championships and he represented Palestine in Dubai and Canada. This highly talented Australian Palestinian young man has a very promising future.

Sami the youngest in the family is 12 years old and he did not decide his professional future yet. He loves sport and plays basket ball since a young age.

Georges and Caroline family portrays the image of the perfect family. They represent the hardworking and successful family that combines between the Australian scientific distinctive mind and the Palestinian kind pure heart. They are such a pride for the west and east in this trifling dark lifeti
