Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation’s Flower Day Appeal will open at this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show with a floral design exhibit presented in conjunction with major sponsor, Flowers Victoria.
“The Foundation is excited to launch our major appeal supporting women and girls in our community at Melbourne’s vibrant International Flower and Garden Show,” said Catherine Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation.
“Opening the Flower Day Appeal at the show is reminiscent of the Foundation’s early appeals in the 1920s, when the Flower Growers Association provided fresh flowers for the appeal that were sold to raise funds for metropolitan hospitals and charities. We are very proud that this affiliation continues today and we thank Flowers Victoria for their continued support.”
Following from the success of the first Flower Day event in 1925 that raised £2,577 ($188,000 in today’s dollar), the appeal continued as a fixture on Melbourne’s giving calendar for over 50 years.
In 2013, Flower Day was re-launched as part of the Foundation’s 90th anniversary celebrations.
The Appeal raises awareness and vital funds for women and girls in our community at risk of and experiencing homelessness, disadvantage and the trauma of domestic violence.
The current appeal is strengthened by renewed support from Flowers Victoria.
“We are pleased to be a part of the Flower Day campaign and excited to see the display that they put together at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show,” said Rennae Christensen, Manager of Flowers Victoria.
The floral exhibit will be styled by local florist, Nadine Moller from ‘Art Stems on Lygon’ and will showcase the history of the appeal with a bright and captivating arrangement of blooms.
The Flower Day Appeal exhibit will be located in the Royal Exhibition Building, opposite ‘Growers Avenue’ at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, 26 – 30 March 2014.
