‘Oscars of the stadium world’: Optus battles Lord’s for world’s best venue

An arena of fierce battles and epic entertainment in its first two years, Perth’s showpiece 60,00-seat Optus Stadium will soon have its own battle on the big stage against world sport’s most iconic venues.

Not satisfied amassing 50 awards near and far since opening in January 2018, the $1.8 billion arena is shortlisted for two of the top gongs at the prestigious International Stadium Business Awards at Old Trafford in Manchester on April 21.

Industry insiders regard them as the Oscars of the stadium and venue industry and Perth’s multi-purpose arena, which last year hosted WA’s first A-League grand final, day-night test, Bledisloe Cup and a string of music royalty, was nominated for Venue of the Year but faces stiff competition from some of the world’s most famous sport stadiums such as Lord’s, the traditional home of cricket in London.

Slow off the mark after a string of construction setbacks and a change in government, Optus Stadium wasted no time getting out of the blocks and winning over a legion of sports fans here and beyond, as well as a growing conglomerate of respected international stadium officianados.

While one revered cricket writer clearly missing the WACA described the venue’s inherent design as Colosseum-like, it late last year was bestowed ‘most beautiful stadium in the world’ rights in Paris and is clearly an industry gamechanger on a global level.Optus Stadium is also a contender for ‘event of the year’, the hype of English soccer giant Manchester United’s 10-day tour attracting 21,000 visitors west, 105,000 fans to Optus and the eye of international experts. Victory would prove popular at the ceremony hosted at Man United’s home ground and add polish for those from Perth taking the trophy home.
