A mountain climber has died after falling from a significant height in Tasmania.

The man was climbing Mt Geryon, 150km north-west of Hobart, with three others when he fell about 9.30am on Friday, police said.

Access to the terrain was ‘extremely difficult’ and the man was unable to be saved.

‘Tasmania Police including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were dispatched to the scene,’ a statement read.

‘Upon arrival access to the difficult terrain was possible via winch and the man was confirmed deceased a short time ago.

‘Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones at this sad time.’

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The three others who were with the man were uninjured.
