Globetrotting was the second most popular pastime. Music, cooking and walking rounded off the top five.

Watching TV came eighth, while going to the pub was 15th. Finance trading site eToro, which polled 2,000, found adults spend £968.43 a year, and over seven hours a week on their passion.

It said: “Football infiltrates the lives of millions. So it’s no surprise so many get swept up in its rivalry and drama.”

Three in five parents had encouraged kids to take up their interests.
